Sometimes if you look hard enough you might find an island vacation in your own backyard. It could be a hangout spot such as a bar, restaurant or water park that reminds you that you are on the islands or close enough! If you are ever in the Dallas/Fort Worth area this is where I suggest you visit while in Arlington, Texas. Arlington is home to the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys, UT Arlington and Six Flags over Texas. Here are perfect spots to check out with the entire family and if you’re like me, it’s also a great way to support local businesses!
If you are ever in for a sweet and cool treat you’ll love Bahama Buck’s. They have a variety of shaved ice drinks and the aura of the place has a beach vibe. My go-to spot is the one closest to Six Flags Hurricane Harbor on Lamar Blvd and AT&T Way. The owners are great supporters of the local community and neighboring high school. Believe me, once you try their shaved ice you’ll be back for more!
I have to admit, when I have a taste for a jerk spiced meal, Jamaica Gates is always my first pick. Not only will you experience island hospitality, you will love the food as well. Built on two sons love for a mother’s dream fulfilled, the restaurant was born. You will experience the island vibes with its authentic Jamaican dishes, drinks and staff, most of which are native to the beautiful island country of Jamaica. I recommend the oxtail, escovitch fish or rasta pasta with chicken! Also ask for Chef’s juice. It’s the most savoring fruit juice and vegetable concoction I’ve ever tried. Also, if you’re brave enough to try their confusion sauce or jerk seasoning ask for a couple of bottles to take home. They are available for purchase as well. I personally, like to feel that fire rush through my head when I eat Jamaican food. That let’s me know it was cooked right. If you’re going to call it rude boy jerk, I’ll expect it to be spicy!
Also, if you are into live reggae music, they have several bands on rotation Friday and Saturday nights. My favorite, D’Ras & Sharac Band, performs the first Saturday of the month from 7-11pm. I know you will love their performance as much as I do!
If you want to experience a not so crowded waterpark I would definitely recommend Hawaiian Falls waterpark in Mansfield, about 20 minutes south of Arlington. Parking, tubes and life jackets are FREE. A cooler pass is $15. Senior and military $21.99ea, general admission is $28.99, kids under 4ft are $21.99 and 2yrs old and under are free. I always love businesses who offer military discounts.
Visit and enjoy Arlington, Texas!
